Kanudi and Lae Power Plants

As a measure of emergency, due to the shortage of electricity in Papua New Guinea, the PNG Electrical Authority ordered two mobile gas-turbines from GE. These turbines model TM 2500 (26MW each) come almost completely assembled on trailers. One was delivered to Kanudi power-plant near Port Moresby, and the second one to the port of Lae (the other side of the country). Each one had to be put on concrete bases and complete assembly and commissioning. In addition, in each location a connection to the grid via transformers and switchyard was made, and fuel system installed. These gas turbines are Dual-Fuel type, and if no gas is available the turbines may be operated using diesel oil. Such a project is a fast-track solution (two-three months if all goes well). There is though a challenge of logistics delivering the turbines to site and also training the operation crew.
