The Gilboa PSPP (Pumped Storage Power Plant) is located at the Gilboa Mountain, on the North of Israel; close to the town of Beit She’an.
This hydroelectric power plant pumps water between high and low ponds through two underground energy-generating turbines, producing more than 300 MW of power. During periods of low power usage, the turbine pumps water into the upper reservoir to be dropped down again when needed. This is one of the most efficient ways to produce and store large volumes of energy, with the ability to meet high demand. Shikun&Binui and Electra were responsible for the project’s financing, construction, and operation. InfraRed Capital Partners joined to the first two consortia to form a SPC named PSP Co. Total investment reached about 0.5B USD.
Upper and lower reservoirs volume are 2,400,000m3 each, and the height difference is 500 m’.Total energy stored is 3000MWh. A 161 kV outdoor substation serves for connection to the Israel Electric Corporation (IEC) grid.
G.H.D acted as onshore OE, supervising commissioning and hand-over from the EPC main contractor to the Operator (GE).
The plant was commissioned in 2020.
